Dir en grey adalah band jepang yang terbentuk pada tahun 1997, sebagaimana halnya band band jepang mereka mengusung tema visual rock. namun lambat laun mereka telah menaggalkan image visual pada diri mereka dan kini lebih condong mengusung aliran metalcore.
hal ini dilakukan agar mereka diakui dalam bermusik bukan dalam hal berpenampilan. mereka telah mengeluarkan tujuh album yang mana tiga album terakhir telah diliris dieropa maupun amerika.
mereka menggelar tour eropa yang pertama kali pada saat tahun 2005 di jerman kemudian mereka ikut serta pada festival ROCK am Ring dan ROCK in PARK 2005 - 2006.
pada tahun 2006 mereka tour di amerika. mereka juga ikut ambil bagian dalam KORN FAMILY VALUES 2006. lalu pada tahun 2007 meraka tampil dalam tour bersama DEFTONES di amerika.kemudian live di eropa dalam ANKKAROCK, MERC LUNA FESTIVAL dan WACKEN OPEN AIR.
awal tahun 2009 mereka tour di inggris dan irlandia dengan Kerrang!'s "Relentless Tour '09".

Okay. Dir en grey's music, I feel, is in four different styles:

Era: 1997-2001.
Albums: Missa, GAUZE, Macabre
Style: Dir en grey started off a lot softer than they are now as far as the music goes. Although, to be fair, Kyo's gotten a little more outlandish with his lyrics. Anyway. I would recommend this if you're more of a fan of JPop but also enjoy some JRock. There's not much screaming or Kyo's gibberish. Lyrics are all or mostly Japanese.

Era: 2002-2003
Albums: sixUGLY, Vulgar
Style: By now, Dir en grey's style has gotten a little more metal/hardcore although still musical. For example, R to the Core is almost all rough singing from Kyo, but the music is hoppy, happy and freaking catchy. If you don't mind more screaming with the same amazing melodies, you'd like anything from this period of music.

Era: 2004-2006
Albums: Withering to death.
Style: Withering to death. is a lot more intense than previous albums. There's more screaming, but Kyo still sings a fair bit. Kyo also has been using a lot more English in his lyrics as of late.

Era: 2007-Current
Albums: The Marrow of a Bone, Uroboros
Style: These later albums are, by far, their most hardcore metal-sounding albums. There is lots of screaming, less singing, and it's far more raw than anything they've done before. They've been labelled as "progressive metal" this era. Kyo's lyrics are more sane, sensible, but still tragic and angry.
